On a narrow plot of land, boasting only a 6-meter facade, nestled within the historic center of Zakynthos, on Pilika Alley, a duplex with an attic and a flat roof is taking shape. A courtyard is meticulously designed and positioned at the heart of the plot. Serving to partition the living room and kitchen from the bedroom, it also serves to ensure ample illumination and ventilation through-out them. In that configuration, the ground floor living room extends into the outdoor space, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor areas.
The patio also enhances the lighting of the upper floor, which is accessible via a shared staircase. A private linear staircase connects the upper floor with the attic and the second room of the apartment, as well as with the flat roof situated at the rear side of the plot. From that vantage point one can enjoy views of both Strani Hill and the sea.
Given the limited space available on the island, small Zante houses often have efficient layouts, with multiple levels or clever storage solutions to max-imize space – so does Pilika Duplex.
The Mediterranean aesthetic is embraced, featuring elements such as lime-washed walls, terracota tiles and wooden accents, black steel and definitely the scentful climbing Mpougarini – the local name for Arabian Jasmine. This style creates a cohesive look with the island’s traditional architecture, thus redifining conventional boundaries. The shapes, dimensions and material of the openings, for example, lend a contemporary touch to Pilika Duplex.
